Indian artist Sudarsan Pattnaik won the
coveted gold medal at the ninth Moscow Sand Sculpture Championship, "The
Magical World Of Sand," held this week at Kolomenskoye in the Russian
capital.
He took home the prize for best composition
for his 15-foot-high sculpture of Gandhi, which promoted a message of
peace and nonviolence.
The 39-year-old artist is self-taught, he told Times of India. He said the audience was his teacher.
"I worked as a child labor and used to practice on the beach," Pattnaik explained.
Pattnaik, who lives in Odisha, India, has
participated in more than 50 international sand sculpture competitions
and has won several awards.
