We’ve all heard of the famous cruise ship
‘Titanic,’ but have you heard of the Costa Concordia? Just like the
Titanic, this ship went down.
The disastrous event happened on January 13th, 2012 and resulted with the loss of 32 people.
The disastrous event happened on January 13th, 2012 and resulted with the loss of 32 people.
The ship crashed off the holiday island of Giglio after it sailed too close to the shore. It used to be a gleaming white luxury liner and now it’s an absolute wreck.
After the crash, the ship got completely
destroyed. This area appears to be some sort of theatre and now it
looks, well, like this
The whole room is a mess and the speakers look like they no longer function properly. This would cost a fortune to clean up! Being such a big ship, the evacuation took six hours to
complete. Thankfully, most of the passengers managed to make it ashore.
However there
reports of missing people for months. Two were accounted for. The Costa
Concordia is one of the largest ships to ever be abandoned.
After
the tragic accident, Captain Schettino was arrested on preliminary charges of
manslaughter. This was a connection to the shipwreck, failing to assist 300
passengers, and failing to be the last to leave the wreck. Eighteen month after the disaster, Captain
Schettino was found guilty of manslaughter of 32 passengers. He was
sentenced to 16 years in prison.
He received ten years for multiple manslaughter, five years for causing the disaster, an extra year for abandoning the people on the cruise ship, and an additional month for providing false information to authorities
Two years later, in 2014, the ship was refloated and taken to its home port for dismantling so its materials can be recycled.
