Over 20 herdsmen killed, 83 cows slaughtered in Nasarawa State

There was tension in the Adayi and Loko areas of Nasarawa local government area of Nasarawa state when 20 herdsmen were killed by suspected gunmen.    According to Daily Trust, the attack was carried out by gunmen from the riverine areas of Benue State and Nasarawa states. It was reported that 83 cows were also slaughtered by the perpetrators. Ismaila Numa who is the spokesperson of the state police confirmed the attack. He however said the command only got report of the killing of the cows but could not ascertain the killing of the herdsmen. Mallam Bideri Ahmadu who is the Fulani leader in Adayi area claimed Agatu gunmen were responsible for the killing of the cows.

Alhaji Abubakar Ahmed Sabo who is the traditional ruler of Loko accused Agatu youths of killing 20 men in the attack. He said the attackers crossed from Benue at about 10:30 am on Saturday, April 30 and started shooting sporadically, killing many people and cows.  “Upon realising they could not achieve their aim, the Agatu youths opened fire on the cows, killing many people and 83 cows instantly while others who sustained bullet wounds are lying in the bush,” he said. The paramount ruler of the area, Alhaji Abubakar Ahmed Sabo, said Agatu youths have invaded and killed Fulani men and women and their cattle. The attack might be a reprisal attack as Agatu was the centre of violence two months ago when Fulani herdsmen laid seige in the region and killed about 300 villagers.
