A graphics designer has created an
interesting infographic that shows the world's most popular spoken
languages and where they are spoken by 6.3 billion people. Chinese tops
the list, followed by Spanish, English, Hindi and Arabic.
Other languages included in the
infographic: Vietnamese, Japanese, Persian, Malay/Bahasa, Italian, Urdu,
Marathi, Russian, Telegu, Javanese, Tamil, Korean, German, Lahnda,
Portuguese, Turkish, Bengali, and French.
South China Morning Post’s graphics director Alberto Lucas Lopéz posted the infographic on his blog,
writing: "There are at least 7,102 known languages alive in the world
today. Twenty-three of these languages are a mother tongue for more than
50 million people. The 23 languages make up the native tongue of 4.1
billion people.
"We represent each language within black
borders and then provide the numbers of native speakers (in millions) by
country. The color of these countries shows how languages have taken
root in many different regions."
Information was gleaned from the database Ethnologue and features living languages that have been cataloged since 1951.
