Presidency summons Borno gov over deaths in IDP camps

There were indications yesterday that President Muhammadu Buhari, who is perturbed by the reports of malnutrition and death of some Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, in government camps in Borno State, has summoned the governor, Alhaji Kassin Shettima, for some explanations.

Recall that Doctors Without Borders- (Médecins Sans Frontières), MSF, an international humanitarian aid organization last week, released a statement alongside photographs of grossly malnourished children, stating that about 24,000 IDPs needed urgent medical attention. The organization also stated that at least 30 people, mainly children, die daily from this condition.

The report, it was gathered, infuriated President Muhammadu Buhari who felt that despite huge spending by the different levels of government as well as donor agencies and philanthropists on the IDPs, there was little to show for it. Shettima, who was at the Presidential Villa, Abuja yesterday, was seen coming down from the office of the Chief of Staff. He, however, refused to speak to Journalists who had approached him for comments on the allegations and also his mission at the Presidential Villa. The governor kept mum on the issues, saying it was a private visit as he walked towards his car.
